The Barrett site was originally built as Barrett Elementary School in the late 1940s. The City of Belmont acquired the property and closed the school in 1983, officially converting it into the Barrett Community Center in 1985.
Due to age and infrastructure issues, the facility is nearing the end of its usable life. It may become unsafe or non-compliant without major upgrades. Given the state of the building, it doesn’t make sense to invest the funds needed to renovate the existing space to meet today’s and tomorrow’s needs.
Barrett Community Center is currently the primary recreation center for youth and teens in Belmont and home to the following programs.
The Hideout (formerly the Teen Zone)
Belmont Community Learning Center (preschool) -
Partner after school programs
Footsteps Child Care
HeartBeat Dance Academy
Stepping Stones Enrichment Academy
Contracted youth enrichment programs - theater, music lessons, STEAM classes
Sport court, fitness equipment, playground - available to all
The Belmont Community Foundation (BCF), formed in 2022, is a nonprofit resident-volunteer organization dedicated to improving the lives of people in Belmont by bringing together community resources to foster a vibrant, inclusive, and healthy city. Our highest priority currently is to bring awareness and support for funding a new community center for Belmont. BCF was created to support, advocate for, and help fund this vital project.
